Understanding the Montessori Method: An Example of a Student's Day

Dec 14, 2013

When it comes to your child’s education, you want to know they are getting the best there is. For many parents, the Montessori method of education is the perfect choice. People from all walks of life are discovering this method that has been around for generations. It is becoming increasingly popular with families who want more than a traditional education. Those who are choosing this route are discovering the wonderful benefits that the Montessori Method provides their children.

If you are on the fence about whether you want to choose this route for your child, you may want to take a glimpse into the day your student will have. Check out below what a typical student’s day will be when you choose Montessori Education.

Not Your Typical Classroom

When you walk into a Montessori classroom you may notice a few things are different. First your child does not sit at a desk listening to a teacher all day. The classroom is set up to be a learning environment. It is set up that everything is within reach of your students, no matter what their ages. They will choose their activities to work on during the day. Typically you will find the classroom is a large, very open space that your children will work in. There are shelves on all heights of the wall so that even the youngest child can reach educational activities. Centers are set up for your children to learn different avenues. Your child will learn things such as practical life skills such as cooking and cleaning. Language and math centers help your child to develop their love of learning.

Extended Learning Times

Your child will choose what they want to learn as they go throughout their day. They can choose the items they work on during uninterrupted learning periods. These periods last about two to three hours for your children. These periods form the core of the day for your child in a Montessori class. Your child will choose from certain activities that they can work on during this time in an area of their choice. This helps them develop a deeper enjoyment of learning and discovering things on their own.

Your Teacher As A Guide

When you come in the classroom you will notice the teacher is not a typical teacher. They are considered more a guide for your children. They do not stand up and lecture all day long such as in traditional classrooms. They lead your children throughout the day and guide them in their learning adventures. There are certain guidelines that have to be followed during the day and the teacher is there to help your students going through. They learn on their own with guidance from the teacher.

This is just a glimpse into the adventures your child will have in their Montessori classroom. It is not the typical classroom and your child will develop a deeper love of learning. They will learn to think for themselves not just think what others tell them. If you are considering this route for your children check out a classroom for yourself. You will love the atmosphere and the opportunities for your child to learn and develop.

The Montessori Education method is a great opportunity for your children to learn and develop a love of exploring the world around them.
